ZachXBT, a popular crypto sleuth, alleges that law enforcement arrested the wrong crypto fugitive. This incident is connected to the 2022 theft of Bored Ape NFTs. The event has been dubbed one of the biggest non-fungible token thefts in history, comprising the theft of over $1 million in Bored Ape NFTs.

ZachXBT’s comment, made on May 9 on X (formerly Twitter), has since gained attention for making an important point. ZachXBT had first traced a further $1 million wallet to an X account that has since been deleted. That wallet was the source of the scam.

More than just a prank, in 2022 the attacker made off with 14 Bored Ape NFTs. Bored Ape Yacht Club debuted in 2021 and almost instantly became one of the most valuable NFT collections. Today, it can proudly lay claim to a cumulative market capitalization over $300 million. Based on NFT marketplace OpenSea “floor” pricing, Bored Ape NFTs now go for an average of about $30,000 per ape.

In 2023, law enforcement kidnapped Sam Curry while he was at an airport. He was the former Yuga Labs security researcher and was allegedly responsible for the incident.

It's unfortunate to see how a security researcher was detained when stronger leads on a threat actor potentially responsible exist - ZachXBT

ZachXBT implies that this theft was something that Curry was already working on under his security analysis for Yuga Labs.

In reality as part of his security work at Yuga, [Curry] had been investigating the theft and used a private key put in the JavaScript of the website by the threat actor - ZachXBT

ZachXBT has requested further investigation into the matter.
